Annual Scholarship Package Support
GLOW has been providing scholarship packages to children from poor, marginalised and single parent families studying in public schools. This package support includes stationery and school supplies, uniform, bags and shoes. While public schools are free of charge up to grade 10 in Nepal these additional supplies must be purchased.
This year, we would like to continue providing scholarship packages to help the students continue their studies.
Those that received the support are performing very well in their studies at school. This support cost a fraction of what those studying in private school pay tuition fee or boarding charge.
These students have no means of paying any tuition fee since they are poor or marginalised hence they study in public schools. We have found this project is most effective to children growing up since the student grows up with their own family in their own culture and family setting. They are given the essential items they need to get education from free, local public schools.
We have divided the plan in three different groups:
- Grade 1 -5
- Grade 6-8
- Grade 9-12
We also do monitoring visits to the student’s homes and schools to observe their academic progress.
This project will directly impact 500 students and indirectly impact 1,700 members
Outcome
- This project will help prevent students from dropping out of school as they reach higher grades and viewed as a bread winner for the family.
- Their family will also value education since their cost / expenses is lightened.
- The students will receive necessary items to continue their studies
- Upon receiving this support, the students will be able to concentrate and perform well in their studies.
Resources and Equipment support
(library & games resources; science & computer lab equipment)
Public schools throughout the country lack the necessary academic resources and equipment. Studying in public schools, students may complete their high school diploma without seeing a test tube, let alone gaining practical lab room experience. Providing such learning aid to schools will give students exposure to interactive learning and develop practical skills with these learning experiences. Ultimately, students will gain an advantage in pursuing higher education and the job market.
We will do a needs assessment on each of these schools before launching the project. In this heading, we have planned to set up a science lab, a computer lab, a games room and a library.
Scheduled - all through the year 2023
Outcome
- The students will enhance their knowledge with the aided learning methods.
- They will get practical, hands-on learning environment.
- Practical learning will enhance their knowledge and equip them better for the job market.
- It will give them an edge over other students.
Outcome
- The teachers will gain a new and helpful way of teaching.
- Students and teachers will learn to interact while learning.
- The students’ participants will improve the learning environment.
- Three teachers will be directly impacted by this training. The students and the schools will indirectly benefit from the training.
Tutor training
Some public schools are switching to English medium. We are planning on assisting the transition by providing the teachers with interactive teaching methods with the new resources which are locally available.
This training will prove effective for the teachers at the schools receiving resource & equipment support. Many teachers have never had the opportunity to work in a science lab. This activity will help create entirely new teaching and learning experiences, bridging the teaching and learning gap. Ultimately students will gain an advantage in the pursuit of higher education and a job market.
Scheduled - all through the year 2023
The 101 women – to mark one century since the abolition of sati practice in Nepal. Sati was a practice where wives were burned alive on their husband’s funeral pyres.
To mark the end of the cruel practice, we give priority to single women, the poor and the marginalised in our vocational training programs and to help them become financially independent.
This program is also focused on those forced to leave school early due to their family’s poor financial situation or otherwise lack basic skill and knowledge.
This program also caters mostly to women who are single (widowed, divorced, separated or abandoned) from poor and marginalised families and backgrounds.
Job scarcity in Nepal has forced many Nepalese into the foreign labour market. This trend has helped families meet their financial needs but on the other hand, it has also left many families broken and destroyed.
This is a small step to enabling single parents to provide and care for their children’s needs to help families remain together making the switch from risky black-collar jobs to blue-collar jobs and gaining financial independence.
Sustainable Vocational Tailoring Training
GLOW has held business-oriented vocational tailoring training since 2014.
This training is for six months or 390 training hours. During this time the participants will learn to design a draft and tailor 20-24 different clothing items (mostly women’s).
Around 75% of the training graduates have taken up tailoring as profession, some have started mini and others micro scale tailoring business. The business has provided financial support to the families of the single, poor and the marginalised women and their family. This year we would like to continue the vocational tailoring training – we are expecting around 20 participants to enroll this year. Each participant will receive one sewing machine at the end of the training.
Scheduled Mid July 2023
Outcome
- The single, poor and marginalised women will learn a new trade.
- This trade will help them to earn money and help them to sustain themselves and their family financially.
- They will learn to utilise their time and engage their time in something productive.
- This project will directly impact 20 participants and indirectly impact 100 people.
Outcome
- The participants will gain further recognition of their skill.
- They are able to bid for government tailoring programs.
- They can apply as facilitator at training institutes.
- This project will directly impact 20 participants and indirectly impact 100 people.
Scheduled Mid November 2023
CTEVT - Level one certificate test preparation training
The level one Certificate exam preparation training is provided to those who performed well at the Sustainable Vocational Tailoring Training.
Passing this exam will grant the recognition and the ability to apply for government tailoring programs and to apply for higher-earning jobs.
This training will last one and a half months where the participants will prepare for the practical exam held by the Centre for Technical Education and Vocational Training.
There will be a maximum of 20 participants participating in this training.
Skill and Leadership Training - (SaLT) - Residential
This residential training is a unique project in its own way.
We take 20 women a maximum per year for three months from remote villages and teach them mainly tailoring and leadership.
They are trained to become social mobilisers in their villages along with tailoring to sustain themselves financially.
This is the sixth year since this program has been launched and most of the graduates are using the skill and knowledge they gained at the training to sustain themselves and their families financially.
For this year we would like to invite those that are doing well with tailoring and give them further input and prepare them for CTEVT level one skill test exam.
So far GLOW’s founder and advisor, Mrs Sita Poudel, has been working as a counsellor and a warden despite her husband’s ill health. To lessen her heavy load, this year we will need to hire a warden. This is also our need for this training.
This year we would like to host this training slightly differently.
We are thinking of inviting those that have already graduated for an advanced level course on tailoring and fashion design course.
This will prepare them for more technical skill work and further knowledge of tailoring.
The participants will stay for three months and learn from various teachers and facilitators.
Scheduled January 2023
Outcome
- Women from remote villages get an opportunity to receive training at the center in Pokhara.
- They can become financially independent.
- They can apply the knowledge they earned at the training to improve their living standards.
- Develop good family and good future leadership.
Outcome
- Single, poor and marginalised people will learn to conceptualise and utilise their kitchen gardens to grow vegetables for themselves.
- This will be beneficial for them and their children’s health.
- This will help them save money on vegetables.
Sustainable Agriculture
This year we have begun agriculture project.
This year, so far we have finished building a truss for a vegetable tunnel and planting different types of vegetables and fruits.
There is very little water since it hasn’t rained as was expected. Prayers are needed for a reserve water tank for irrigation.
We expect some of the women who wish to take agriculture as their profession to enrol for agriculture training.
So far, we have been able to sponsor three men for a two-month-long training with the local government authority that is hosting the training.
FAITH
(Food Always in the Home)
Many families living in city areas own a small garden space. To utilise and eat healthy and save their income we have planned to train them in kitchen gardening.
They can rent a place even if they lack garden. We will design a manual for this short training.
Scheduled - all through the year
Sponsorship
The sponsorship support is provided to individuals who wish to pursue other vocational training apart from that which is facilitated by GLOW.
Outcome
- This support will cater to the need and want of the participants.
- This will help those who don’t see themselves as a tailor.
- This will diversify the training opportunities.
Strategic grants
(tools & equipment; seeds & livestock)
Many skilled individuals are either jobless or forced to live off daily labour work due of their financial situation. They are unable to purchase tools and equipment related to their trade.
The grant will enable individuals to purchase tools and equipment and pursue a profession / trade using their knowledge and skill.
Individuals with vocational skills are eligible for the grant. We give priority to single women (widowed, divorced, separated or abandoned), poor and marginalised.
This support is also for individuals who would like to start raising their own chicken and goats and a vegetable garden.
Scheduled - all through the financial year
Outcome
- The beneficiaries will be able to live an independent life
- The beneficiaries can pursue their choice and develop from there
- Those that already have certain skill can pursue that
- They can live financially independent lives and pursue their skill and knowledge.
Vocational Training Development
We need to hire one staff to host the projects under ‘Vocation’ and we have estimated for twelve months of the year at 30,000 per month.
